MA Pathways

Massachusetts Pathways LLC, a collaboration between Commonwealth of Massachusetts, JVS Boston, and Social Finance, is the nation’s first adult education/employment Pay for Success Bond in the country. This $15 million project will provide adult education and employment services to nearly 3,000 individuals across the greater Boston area, north shore, and metro-west. In 2017, BII made an investment into the project that will be repaid based on successful social outcomes. Learn more

Sunwealth

Sunwealth is a pioneering clean energy investment firm determined to unleash the power of commercial solar by delivering meaningful returns and tangible impact. Sunwealth’s Boston Interfaith Solar Project provides project financing and development of solar on houses of worship. In 2017, BII provided a loan to help finance clean energy on three houses of worship in Dorchester, Jamaica Plain and Roxbury, thereby reducing energy bills. Also in 2017, we made a second investment in a fund that aggregates low-income homeowners and anchor non-profits in economically distressed neighborhoods. Learn more

Boston Ujima Project

The Boston Ujima Project is organizing neighbors, workers, business owners and investors to create a community-controlled economy in Greater Boston. The Ujima Project seeks to create a new business and finance ecosystem that democratizes local investment, production and consumption to grow community wealth and resilience. The project will build and connect a democratic investment and real estate fund, a business alliance that meets community standards, a network wide worker council, and an alternative local currency.

Initiative for a Competitive Inner City (ICIC)

Initiative for a Competitive Inner City’s mission is to drive economic prosperity in America’s inner cities through private sector investment to create jobs, income and wealth for local residents. With two decades of experience in research and design of national small business growth programs, ICIC is located in Dudley Square in Roxbury and partners with corporations, financial institutions, foundations, government agencies, and individuals.

JP Local First

JP Local First is a community organization that promotes locally owned and sustainable businesses for a vibrant Jamaica Plain. JP Local First aims to provide education about the significant environmental, economic, and cultural benefits of supporting the local economy. BII provided a grant to JP Local First to support local and independent businesses in the rapidly gentrifying Washington St. corridor of Jamaica Plain.

Solidarity Economy Initiative

The Solidarity Economy Initiative (SEI) emerged from Access Strategies’ Economic Democracy Fund and is a Massachusetts based funding program developed by Access Strategies Fund, Boston Impact Initiative, the Center for Economic Democracy and the Solidago Foundation. As a capacity building program, SEI provides funding, collective training and technical assistance to a cohort of Massachusetts based grassroots organizations. SEI seeks to build power and evolve strategies towards a long term social movement capable of transforming American capitalism into a just, sustainable, and democratic economy.

WeSpire

WeSpire is an employee engagement platform that empowers forward-thinking global organizations to enhance their results. WeSpire helps employees build awareness, take action and inspire others to participate in programs including sustainability, culture, and team building. In 2016, BII made an equity investment to support WeSpire’s growth and expand the platform’s diversity and inclusion offerings. Learn more

Wellspring Harvest

Wellspring Harvest is part of Wellspring Cooperative, a community-based cooperative development organization with a mission to create a network of worker-owned companies in Springfield, MA, that provide on-the-job training, employment and wealth-creation opportunities for low income and unemployed residents of the city. In 2016, BII purchased Direct Public Offering shares to help build the first commercial greenhouse in Springfield. Learn more

Tremendous Maid

Tremendous Maid is a family-owned and operated residential and commercial cleaning business based in Dorchester. Through the leadership of Dominican co-founders Rosa Tejeda, Victoria Amador and Nisaury Amador, Tremendous Maid provides quality wages, employee benefits, and green cleaning services in an industry where customer demand for low prices incentivizes low wages, poor employee benefits, and other price-cutting practices. In 2015, BII provided a growth capital loan to stabilize financing and expand services. Learn more

Tony Williams Dance Center

Tony Williams Dance Center is a studio in Jamaica Plain dedicated to providing quality dance instruction to Boston’s diverse urban community.From ballet to salsa to hip hop, TWDC boasts one of the most diverse class offerings, faculty, student and parent populations in the Greater Boston Area. TWDC produces the highly acclaimed Urban Nutcracker, and has helped hundreds of Boston youth develop physical and mental discipline and emotional confidence through the arts. In 2014, BII refinanced TWDC’s debt, resulting in increased scholarships and additional staff. Learn more
