Our portfolio combines below-market debt, patient equity and strategic grantmaking. Below are some of the businesses and non-profit organizations we’ve invested in that we believe contribute to making our economy more just, sustainable and inclusive.

88 Acres

88 Acres is an artisan food enterprise, producing healthy snacks free of the top eight food allergens. 88 Acres seeks to craft foods with the simplest and most sustainably sourced ingredients, create transparency throughout their supply chain and promote healthy living and food awareness among consumers. 88 Acres is manufacturing at the Pearl facility, creating over a dozen new jobs in Dorchester. In 2014, BII made a convertible debt investment to help 88 Acres secure equipment and launch operations. Learn more

99 Degrees Custom

99 Degrees Custom is a Lawrence-based light manufacturing company specializing in sewn and bonded sports and activewear. Employing more than 40 people who are 95 percent people of color and 60 percent women, 99 Degrees is pioneering a future where apparel is built by an empowered workforce, robotics, lean process and agile systems. The Boston Impact Initiative provided an initial loan in 2014 to help secure a major contract and a second loan in 2016 to support business growth. Learn more

Advoqt

Advoqt is a provider of IT outsourcing, consulting and staffing services. Founder Reinier Moquete’s ambition is to become one of the country’s largest minority-owned IT service providers and to create career opportunities for Black and Latino employees, who are estimated to make up as little as 4 to 5 percent of the tech workforce. In 2016, BII provided a convertible debt investment to support implementation of key growth strategies. Learn more

CERO

CERO (Cooperative Energy Recycling and Organics) is a worker-owned cooperative that collects waste from local businesses. CERO’s waste separation systems increase reclamation and sale of clean paper, plastics, metals, waste vegetable oil and organic food waste, reducing trash sent to landfill and incinerators by 50 percent or more. This is now our third investment in CERO: in 2013, we partnered with Cooperative Fund of New England to provide a start-up loan; in 2014, we purchased CERO’s Direct Public Offering shares; in 2016, we’ve made an additional loan for working capital and equipment. Learn more

City Fresh Foods

City Fresh Foods is a 20-year-old, nationally acclaimed enterprise that delivers fresh, wholesome meals to charter schools, eldercare facilities and other organizations throughout the Boston area. As one of Roxbury’s major employers, City Fresh is respected as a “triple bottom line” business that brings returns to people, planet and profits. City Fresh plays an anchor role in Boston’s burgeoning urban food movement, serving major customers such as Meals on Wheels while sourcing from area producers and advocating for increased local food production. In 2014, BII partnered with Cienega Capital to make an equity investment. Learn more

COHIF

Coalition of Occupied Homes in Foreclosure (COHIF) works to stabilize the Greater Four Corners neighborhood of Dorchester by helping residents of foreclosed homes to stay in their homes, developing permanently affordable housing, and helping extend these efforts in other neighborhoods. The organization intends to place its homes into a community land trust. In 2016, BII provided a loan to support COHIF’s Community Stabilization Pilot Project, advancing crucial anti-displacement strategies in Boston. Learn more

Commonwealth Kitchen

Commonwealth Kitchen is a nonprofit culinary incubator that provides shared kitchen space for small food-related businesses. Since 2009, CWK has launched more than 120 businesses. The incubator currently services 50 businesses per month, 70 percent of which are women- or minority-owned, and has created over 350 jobs. In 2013, BII provided a loan to CWK to open a new commercial kitchen in Dorchester to serve local food entrepreneurs. Learn more

Delectable Desires

Delectable Desires Pastries offers edible art in the form of cakes and pastries. Owner Carlene O’Garro, a Mattapan native, says that her Caribbean roots influence her use of ingredients and baking style. Forgoing law school to pursue her passion, Carlene has received numerous awards for Delectable Desires Pastries. In 2016, BII provided a loan to support Delectable Desires in opening its second location at South Station. Learn more

Democracy Brewing

Democracy Brewing is a start-up worker-owned brewery and pub committed to providing great beer and hosting community conversations about democratic ideals of liberty, justice and equal opportunity. As a cooperative, the business creates the opportunity for all its workers to enjoy the profit and pride that comes with ownership. The Brewery will open its doors at 35 Temple Place in March 2018. In 2017, BII Fund purchased Direct Public Offering shares. Learn more

Done Good

DoneGood, a certified B Corp, is an app and browser extension that harnesses consumer purchasing as a force for change, helping consumers discover vetted companies with ethical practices across eight categories: Go Green, Give Back, Support Workers, Nontoxic, Made in USA, Cruelty Free, Organic, and Diversity. BII Fund made a convertible debt investment to support the platform in its efforts to redirect consumer dollars toward businesses owned by people of color and women. Learn more

Dorchester Co-op

The Dorchester Community Food Co-op is a community and worker-owned cooperative market that provides economic opportunity and healthy affordable food. The Co-op will provide space for education and cultural activities, and serve as a dynamic center for healthy eating and sustainable living in Dorchester. In 2013, BII provided grant funding to support the completion of a feasibility study and in 2015 purchased Direct Public Offering shares. Learn more

Fresh Food Generation

Fresh Food Generation is a cafe, food truck and catering business committed to serving on-the-go real foods. The company sources ingredients from local farms and prepares delicious meals inspired by Latin American and Caribbean cuisine. In 2013, BII awarded FFG a social business prize through the Future Boston accelerator. In 2014, we provided a follow-on loan to help secure their food truck. In 2017, we provided bridge financing to support FFG’s growth plans. Learn more

Good Clothing Company

Good Clothing Company is dedicated to rebuilding the U.S. apparel manufacturing industry. They work with emerging designers and eco-fashion pioneers looking for a production partner to scale with them. Employing predominantly women, immigrants and low-income people, the company invests in training to move workers from a single production component towards the art and skill of garment construction. In 2016, BII provided a loan to support growth of the company’s Fall River operations to meet client demand. Learn more

Green City Growers

Green City Growers transforms unused space into thriving urban farms, providing clients with immediate access to nutritious food while revitalizing city landscapes and inspiring self-sufficiency. The company makes innovative use of rooftops, vacant lots, parking garages and other previously unutilized spaces to grow vegetables for clients including Whole Foods Market, b.good, and the Boston Red Sox’ Fenway Park. In 2016, BII purchased Direct Public Offering shares. Learn more

LaborX

Described as the “LinkedIn for the LinkedOut,” LaborX hosts a web platform that matches employers with skilled job-seekers without college degrees and from other non-traditional backgrounds. Founded by Yscaira Jimenez, a Dominican immigrant from the Bronx, LaborX helps to create living-wage job opportunities for largely working class people of color. In 2016, BII provided convertible debt to support LaborX’s launch. Learn more

M.S. Peltier Insurance

M.S. Peltier Insurance is a black-owned business with expertise in construction, marine, real estate and transportation industries. The company plans to grow its workforce, which it aims to be comprised of at least 50 percent employees of color. M.S. Peltier is committed to serving Dorchester and Caribbean communities. In 2016, BII provided a loan to support business acquisition and establishment.

MA Pathways

Massachusetts Pathways LLC, a collaboration between Commonwealth of Massachusetts, JVS Boston, and Social Finance, is the nation’s first adult education/employment Pay for Success Bond in the country. This $15 million project will provide adult education and employment services to nearly 3,000 individuals across the greater Boston area, north shore, and metro-west. In 2017, BII made an investment into the project that will be repaid based on successful social outcomes. Learn more

Renew Energy Partners

Renew Energy Partners is a project development firm that specializes in energy efficiency retrofits in New England. In 2014, BII became an anchor investor in a program that brings efficiency upgrades to underserved markets, including Greater Boston’s non-profit buildings and houses of worship. The energy efficiency retrofits contribute to reduced energy costs, making more resources available to provide services. Learn more

Sunwealth

Sunwealth is a pioneering clean energy investment firm determined to unleash the power of commercial solar by delivering meaningful returns and tangible impact. Sunwealth’s Boston Interfaith Solar Project provides project financing and development of solar on houses of worship. In 2017, BII provided a loan to help finance clean energy on three houses of worship in Dorchester, Jamaica Plain and Roxbury, thereby reducing energy bills. Also in 2017, we made a second investment in a fund that aggregates low-income homeowners and anchor non-profits in economically distressed neighborhoods. Learn more

Tony Williams Dance Center

Tony Williams Dance Center is a studio in Jamaica Plain dedicated to providing quality dance instruction to Boston’s diverse urban community.From ballet to salsa to hip hop, TWDC boasts one of the most diverse class offerings, faculty, student and parent populations in the Greater Boston Area. TWDC produces the highly acclaimed Urban Nutcracker, and has helped hundreds of Boston youth develop physical and mental discipline and emotional confidence through the arts. In 2014, BII refinanced TWDC’s debt, resulting in increased scholarships and additional staff. Learn more

Tremendous Maid

Tremendous Maid is a family-owned and operated residential and commercial cleaning business based in Dorchester. Through the leadership of Dominican co-founders Rosa Tejeda, Victoria Amador and Nisaury Amador, Tremendous Maid provides quality wages, employee benefits, and green cleaning services in an industry where customer demand for low prices incentivizes low wages, poor employee benefits, and other price-cutting practices. In 2015, BII provided a growth capital loan to stabilize financing and expand services. Learn more

Wash Cycle Laundry

Wash Cycle Laundry is a commercial laundry service that provides second-chance employment for vulnerable adults in Boston, Philadelphia and Washington DC. The company relies on high-efficiency washers and driers and delivers laundry by bike–saving thousands of gallons of water a year as well as fuel. In 2017, BII Fund made an equity investment to support the company’s expansion to the Boston metro area. Learn more

Wellspring Harvest

Wellspring Harvest is part of Wellspring Cooperative, a community-based cooperative development organization with a mission to create a network of worker-owned companies in Springfield, MA, that provide on-the-job training, employment and wealth-creation opportunities for low income and unemployed residents of the city. In 2016, BII purchased Direct Public Offering shares to help build the first commercial greenhouse in Springfield. Learn more
