Economic inequality is not an accident. It is the result of decades of discriminatory and exclusionary policies and practices that have given rise to today’s racial wealth divide. Market mechanisms alone did not put the wealth divide in place; they cannot alone be expected to undo it. That’s why we need more than investment capital to help close Boston’s racial wealth divide; we also need philanthropic capital in the form of gifts and grants.
